SOLUTIONS TO MODEM PROBELMS

6. I have a 56kbps modem, why am I connecting at lower speeds?

The modem speed 56kbps is a maximum speed under perfect conditions without noise or interference. The actual connection speed is dependent on the telephone line quality. In practice because of electrostatic noise (crackling) & line interference (crosstalk), the modem connection speed varies between 40kbps and 52kbps. On average the connection speed is between 44kbps and 48kbps. To optimize the connection speed & connection reliability, disconnect all phones, faxes, answering machines off the phone line, especially cordless phones.

On a good quality line, you should be getting consistent connection speeds. If you connection speeds vary greatly (ie. there's a big difference between the high and low speeds say of more than 10kbps) it usually indicates there's a problem with your phone line. It is a good idea to have your telephone supplier to look at the line for you. Some telephone lines are multiplexed which means that the line is split into two (possibly more) telephone numbers. For these phone lines, you will get lower connection speeds.
