- Make sure the telephone
line is plugged in securely at both ends (at the wall and at the back
of modem).
- Make sure the telephone
line is plugged into the right socket (usually labeled 'LINE').
- Test the telephone
line by plugging the line for the modem into a telephone handset and
pick up the handset, make sure you can hear the telephone signal.
- Make sure no other
software is using the modem (press CTRL-ALT-DEL to check). Close
any fax or dialup programs that are running.
- Make sure there's
no interrupt request (IRQ) conflicts with the communication ports
which the modem is connected to. To check, go to Control Panel,
System and click on Device Manager.
- If you have Message
Bank on your telephone, make sure you clear out all messages. The
signal on your phone line changes tone when you have a message in the
Message Bank. The modem is unable to detect the different tone.

- Make sure the modem
is correctly selected under dialup networking. Go to Dialup Networking
and click on the connection icon with the right mouse button
then select Properties.
- If you have done
the above and you still get no dial tone, try taking off 'Wait for
dial tone before dialing' under the connection properties. Go to
Dialup Networking and click on the connection icon with right
mouse button and then select Properties. Click on Configure
then Connection and untick the box 'Wait for dial tone before
dialing'.
- If your phone line
is going through a PABX or Commander system you may not
be able to dial out using the modem. You will need a direct line.
Please note, these
instructions are for Win9x & WinMe, however it can be easily extended
to other operation systems.
